Iwan Teifion Davies
Iwan Teifion Davies trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio in London, where he participated in a variety of performances in collaboration with Opera North, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera.
He was a staff conductor at the Salzburger Landestheater, where he conducted the Mozarteum Orchester in performances of La Gazzetta (Rossini), The Trial (Glass), Wiener Blut (Strauss), My Fair Lady and Doctor Dolittle.
He is currently Music Director of OPRA Cymru, for whom he has conducted the world premiere of Gareth Glyn's Welsh-language opera, Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd, and Beethoven’s Fidelio, as well as working on their ‘OPRA Sebon’ broadcast project, a collaboration with composers Pwyllap Siôn, Claire Victoria Roberts and Gareth Olubunmi Hughes.
Most recently he conducted the orchestra of Welsh National Opera in a recording of Gareth Glyn’s second opera, Un Nos Ola Leuad. He is also Head of Music at the Buxton International Festival, where in 2021 he led a production of Pauline Viardot’s Cendrillon.
In 2022 he conducted Donizetti’s Viva la Diva at Buxton.
He is Director of Music at Aberystwyth University.
Outside of music, Iwan is a Welsh-language writer - a chaired and crowned poet, co-author of two opera libretti, and has in the past year won a prize for a short story at the ‘alternative’ National Eisteddfod of Wales and written a short play for Cwmni Theatr y Frân Wen.
